Airtel Money for betting in Kenya: limits, charges and how paybill-style payments work

Airtel Money can fund a licensed betting account, because section 73(4) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 allows mobile money transfers. Airtel caps a transaction at KES 250,000 and a day or a balance at KES 500,000, the same as M-PESA. Airtel-to-Airtel transfers are free; agent withdrawals cost KES 11 to KES 309.

Airtel Money is the mobile money service on Airtel lines, provided by Airtel Money Kenya Limited. You can use it to pay a betting operator that accepts it and to receive payouts, on the same legal footing as M-PESA.

This guide takes the limits and charges from Airtel's own tariff page and sets them beside Safaricom's published figures. The full M-PESA route is in the M-Pesa deposit guide; this page covers what changes when the SIM is Airtel.

Can you legally bet with Airtel Money?

Yes, with a licensed operator. Section 73(4) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 lists "mobile money transfer" among the ways a licensee may receive funds from a player, next to debit cards, electronic funds transfer and cash deposits.

The Central Bank of Kenya authorises mobile money operators as Payment Service Providers under the National Payment System Act 2011 and the National Payment System Regulations 2014. Its directory of authorised providers as at 10 August 2026 lists Airtel Money Kenya Limited second, first licensed on 21 January 2022.

The approved services in that entry match Safaricom's, listed first. Both may issue, process, store, send and facilitate mobile money payments, and both may run a platform that processes payments on behalf of merchants.

Two other rules limit the methods around it. Section 72(7) of the Act bars a licensee from helping you bet by advancing credit or through credit cards. Regulation 83 of the 2026 Conduct Regulations prohibits anonymous gambling and the use of virtual assets unless the Authority approves.

Airtel Money limits and charges

Airtel's tariff page sets three limits, revised together with the Central Bank of Kenya: a ceiling of KES 250,000 for one transaction, KES 500,000 of transactions in a day and KES 500,000 as the largest account balance.

Airtel has also waived all person-to-person fees between Airtel Money customers, in every band. Sending to another network and taking cash from an agent still cost money:

The tariff page lists no separate charge for paying a merchant or a bill. Ask the operator instead, because its terms must set out any processing fee you may incur (section 72(6)(b) of the Act).

For cash at an Airtel Money agent, Airtel asks for your original identification document, a National ID or Kenyan Passport.

How paybill-style payments work on Airtel Money

Airtel's page for the My Airtel App lists a Pay Bill service for paying postpaid bills and the bills of registered merchants. It lists a separate Buy Goods and Services option, Lipa na Airtel Money, for paying shops.

The Airtel Money menu opens with *334#; Airtel's top-up page uses that code for buying airtime through Airtel Money. Safaricom's M-PESA instructions use the same code, dialled from a Safaricom line.

Airtel's pages as accessed do not set out a numbered bill-payment sequence the way Safaricom's Paybill page does. The steps that count are the ones the operator publishes, and the Regulations oblige it to publish them.

An operator cannot quietly add an Airtel number either. Before trading, the Conduct Regulations make it declare to the Authority each payment mechanism it will use (regulation 3(3)(b)). Regulation 4(2)(e) and (f) put its business numbers, shortcodes, USSD codes and deposit methods into terms the Authority approves.

So before the first Airtel deposit, find the Airtel Money number in the operator's terms and compare it with the one on its deposit page. Confirm the operator is licensed first, as set out in how to open a betting account in Kenya.

The limits and the agent fees match band for band. The clearest gap is the transfer inside the network: Airtel charges nothing at any amount, while M-PESA starts charging above KES 100.

That gap concerns person-to-person transfers, not betting deposits. A deposit is a payment to a business, so the person-to-person column does not price it; on Airtel, the operator's terms are the place to look.

Moving money between the two networks

If the operator you use lists a deposit number on one network and your money sits on the other, moving it across costs the transfer fee to other networks. Both providers publish that fee in the same bands.

Illustrative example: you move KES 2,000 from M-PESA to your Airtel Money line. Safaricom charges KES 33 for a transfer of KES 1,501 to 2,500 to a registered user on another network. Airtel's tariff shows the same KES 33 in that band for a transfer the other way.

The fee is paid before the deposit itself, so it adds to the cost of every bet funded this way.

Getting a payout to Airtel Money

The 2026 Conduct Regulations do not tie payouts to one network. Under their Third Schedule, a prize of up to KES 500,000 goes automatically and immediately to the player's registered mobile money wallet or online gambling account, after basic identity verification.

Prizes from KES 500,001 to KES 5,000,000 may go by mobile money or bank transfer within five working days, once ID, ticket ownership and basic anti-money laundering checks are done. Prizes from KES 5,000,001 to KES 50 million go by bank transfer only.

The win must reach your betting balance before any of this: section 70(1) gives the licensee two days to credit it. Tax and any operator fee then come off the way they do on M-PESA, explained in M-Pesa betting withdrawals: limits and charges.

Turning an Airtel payout into cash costs the agent withdrawal charge in the first table, from KES 11 to KES 309.

What this guide does not cover

It does not compare operators or say which accept Airtel Money; the operator's approved terms answer that. Limits you set on your own deposits are covered in deposit limits and time limits in Kenyan betting law.

Questions and answers

Can I use Airtel Money to deposit on a betting site in Kenya?

Yes, if the operator is licensed and accepts it. Section 73(4)(c) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 lists mobile money transfer as a way a licensee may receive a player's funds, and the Central Bank of Kenya lists Airtel Money Kenya Limited as an authorised Payment Service Provider. The Airtel number to pay belongs in the operator's approved terms.

What are the Airtel Money transaction limits in Kenya?

Airtel's tariff page sets a maximum of KES 250,000 per transaction, KES 500,000 in daily transactions and KES 500,000 as the account balance, revised together with the Central Bank of Kenya. These are the same three figures Safaricom publishes for M-PESA, so a large betting deposit or payout meets the same ceilings on either network.

Is Airtel Money cheaper than M-Pesa for betting?

Not in any way the tariff pages show for betting. Airtel has waived person-to-person fees in all bands, while M-PESA charges from KES 7 above KES 100, but a betting deposit is a payment to a business, not a person-to-person transfer. Agent withdrawal fees match on both networks, from KES 11 to KES 309 by band.

How do I find a betting site's Airtel Money number?

Look in the operator's terms and conditions. Under the 2026 Conduct Regulations those terms must carry its paybill numbers, shortcodes and USSD numbers (regulation 4(2)(e)), and each payment mechanism must have been declared to the Authority before trading began (regulation 3(3)(b)). Then compare the number in the terms with the one on the deposit page.

Can betting winnings be paid to my Airtel Money account?

Yes. The Third Schedule to the 2026 Conduct Regulations refers to the player's registered mobile money wallet without naming a network, and a prize of up to KES 500,000 must reach it immediately after basic identity checks. Prizes up to KES 5 million may go by mobile money or bank transfer within five working days; those from KES 5,000,001 to KES 50 million go by bank only.
